What is Parisian Style?

French women are icons of effortless style. They have mastered the understated look that so many of us strive to achieve, walking around looking "I woke up like this" flawless.

If you break down the elements of Parisian Style, with a little practice it's something all of us, not just those blessed to be born in the city of love, can master.

Skincare

French women don't wear a lot of makeup, so a good skincare regime is the building block of their beauty regime. If you can afford good expensive skincare, look for the products with the highest levels of active ingredients: Vitamins A, C and E, Hylauronic Acid, etc.

Affordable brands from the pharmacy such as Cetaphil are also great for their hydrating qualities and are recommended by dermatologists.

Hair

Many French women will get a weekly style such as a blow wave, curls or straightening. They'll wear it out for a couple of days then pin it up in loose, intentionally undone-looking styles until their next appointment. Dry shampoo is the secret to hiding any greasy roots.

Nails

Short, neatly manicured nails and toes are the hallmark of Parisian chic. Think French Manicure rather than dragon talons or flouro nail art.

Makeup

French makeup is understated. French women will spend hours perfecting their complexion with dabs of concealer, rather than slicking on thick foundation.

The natural look is always in style, but if you do want a more dramatic look choose only one of the following French staples: dramatic, perfectly winged eyeliner; smudgy smokey eye; bold red or berry lips.

Fashion

Like everywhere, fashions in France change with the times. But true French women don't follow fads and buy classic pieces that don't go out of style. Here are some Parisian style wardrobe staples:

  • Dark denim jeans
  • French-striped tshirt or long-sleeved shirt
  • White shirt
  • White t-shirt
  • Trench coat
  • Tailored navy blazer
  • Colour block cashmere sweater
  • Pencil skirt
  • Cigarette-leg pant

If you work with your best features and pick hair, makeup and clothing styles that suit your body and face shape, rather than following trends, your on your way to being a French fashion icon in no time!
